how not to be the problem
small things, all of them free, that decide whether a room is good.
Do not film the whole set. One clip, then put it away. A wall of screens is a worse night for everyone standing behind it, and the video is never as good as you think.
Do not push through to the front. The people there got there early and stayed. Find your space and dance in it.
Do not talk through a set at full volume. If you want a conversation, there is a whole bar and a smoking area for that.
Do not bother the artist while they are playing. No requests mid set, no leaning into the booth, no hand on the shoulder. They are working and they are reading the room. Talk to them after.
Look after the staff. Bar staff, security, the person cleaning the bathrooms at 3am. Say please, tip if you can, do not take the night out on them.
Take your cups with you. Leaving the floor covered in glass is how venues lose licences and how scenes lose rooms.
Leave quietly. The venue is in somebody's neighbourhood. The noise outside at closing is the single most common reason a good room gets shut down for good.
